But you report the second part of the super 10 shift work to and take you from kindergarten highest grade Waterford High School so I hope this evening with also Leslie Miller a director title one they were talking a little bit about change that we've been talking about high school for almost a couple of years now ready to make that transition for Cindy long would you get us started a different ways but as Mister McKinney this is a change that we've been talking about at the high school for quite a while in the first light here I've outlined the a proposed change from trimesters where we are currently two semesters I get to get steel little bit odd to Davis High School switch to semesters my very first year the teacher which was 21 years ago so you will finish this year as trimesters and this is what I started to other Educators this is what I know when I started educator proximately 21 years ago a lot of pools had moved to a trimester model and it seems as though now most tools that move back away from the try not to model as we know it instead of giving you a time. Of what it looks like everyday I thought maybe a quick summary and said they know what we're here from 7:30 to 8:05 and then we moved here so I wanted you to know if currently have five classes for and right now in our world of covid-19 cars with 60-minute classes which equals out each class within the 12th trimester has 3600 minutes of instructional time are 12-week grading. Has three parts we have to six weeks which reached out for 40% 17 Trey Hendon 20% for a final exam and I finally I included this because this is an important things to me in this is this is kind of the terminologies that I used it in in my own head on a trimester they have 60 in 22 weekend days for what I called soaking more impressively we would probably say moving things from short-term memory to long-term knowledge and being able to apply the skills but only think about a semester what we're proposing is moving to a 7 class day for students you're looking at schedules that has 50 minutes which then when you multiply that by 18 weeks that would provide 4500 minutes fractional minute for each class. I think we'd be set up much the same way you have to nine weeks this is what Oliver Elementary Schools the middle school dances that much more traditional plan but as you can see here then we're talking back tonight m34 weekend days for Stokes as we look at some of the benefits to the schedule change these are just little things that you would notice as you think about it but perhaps not the biggest things which is what we want to talk at the moment we're talking about increasing instructional time per class by approximately 900 minutes A lot of times your current schedule that would be an additional 15 days of work for us to actually look at the neck these were talking about increased opportunities for overnight and weekend work and while the world of education has moved away from homework and sending kids home with a lot of different things we recognized a lot of times that is necessary in our high school world find where they can go home and read and think and do a few problems on their own instead of moving on to the next thing which is what happens a lot in the trimester plan A lot of times in a trimester plan covering two lessons in one day can you don't have it 5 time for that independent work for your Stoke if you will we've also talked to her about full-year AP and dual credit classes this is a really really big deal for our upper levels I'm currently AP classes typically receive 24 weeks instead of what most students would receive in an entire school year again I speak for my language arts background we need to go home and read a book to be able to collaborate on the weekend and work on a project and with the trimester is simply moved a lot more quickly than we would like it to know you're thinking a lot about green teaching opportunities as kids in a trimester classroom if you're learning to to clap. Or two lessons in one day off the times there's not a great opportunity for reteaching we feel as though a semester plan would give us a lot more opportunity for repeating we also like this would lead to fewer failed credits was just something that we are very dedicated to working toward right now we know the number of our students as they fail classes then they take all the computer we would much rather have them be with how to qualify teachers working through the material and truly learning instead of starting all over all over again and learning simply through a computer program that are seen many of them are driven by extracurricular how do you say you have to maintain a certain grade level in order to continue on with extracurricular most students in a semester setting would only have the opportunity to lose those things out of 9 weeks where we have six weeks so again that's what you fix opportunity instead of something for when you think about that I even go back and forth on that a little bit I think maybe it is better to check in more often and maybe a kids aren't that we need to pull those things away powerful what we found a lot of time in these extracurriculars or what consistency and that's how they start those genuine interest that we want them to have we want them to continue on upper cantlin our director for our Wild Kratts wild cat whole lot also has spoken quite a lot CTE flexibility so when we think about Career and Technical Ed we knows it sits across our Co-op which consists of high school CTE brings it over a million dollars worth of additional money for school system as we can continue to grow are CTE classes which type of Pathways and opportunities for graduation and moving forward and then we can certainly provide more opportunities for students in these often these classes are also tied again to dual credit opportunities which again at higher ed level work on semester plan so our grade book currently for a number of these systems has a trimester plan a semester plan if you like you can simplify and really make this a better opportunity for more student add even more higher level classes that kids can you forward and have more opportunity to pursue Career and Technical education with me know is what hard work for students from us I just I just a few other things down that I didn't even put on the Fly we recognize as well that we've we've managed to squeeze it out with 9th and 10th graders often times for they will have English all year long or Matt all year long but there are still gaps in a trimester plan for our 11th and 12th graders and we do not see the student achievement that we would like to see from the students we recognized its having masks for 12 weeks taking 12 lb. And then going back into math again it's very vote for student loan simply doesn't exist with a semester plan we've had a lot about how this affects each one of these groups of people here we can dig about our people we like to put them on the side we've done a lot of research with consistency of staff students wouldn't change their teachers quite as often and they would be able to build those deeper relationship which again would affect parents as well as teachers we all know that wasn't fair in his comfortable with you answer the questions about all things no matter what so if we know if we know Tricia at the PE teacher doesn't matter if Billy has strict anymore at the BET sure they're always going to reach out to Tricia we can provide more consistency by providing that longer. we also recognize that with Frankford Middle School on at semester plan we can provide a more smooth transition from kids for middle school and also we do have a highly mobile population many times will have students it attempt to enroll at Frankford High School in January because they believe that's the appropriate time however that's halfway through yet another trimester so then please have yet another problem again with parents they understand a traditional schedule just in our current situation of going virtual immediately we just finished our trimester CA final exam to virtually we should have plowed our teachers for that day and came up with some really creative and interesting ideas to do that in the way that they never had to do before but we have the number that we were moving toward the try not to plan this before shouldn't final be in December because that's the plan that they work for it so he thought that traditional schedule would help parents understand where we were moving too as well we recognize that they're going to have to re-evaluate their fur to the masks and that's going to be a lot of work we recognize that a lot of the curriculum masks that are provided through text books and cared for through college board there are always set up on a semester plan so we're hoping that those things can help lend a helping hand to teachers and the time we're supposed it is going to be a lot of a lot of hard work finally a community again our students who are interested trapped in an ad program in through our Co-op would have the opportunity to go to Clinton Central again or held back by or trimester plans because then again they would be switching classes and things would move again into wouldn't have the opportunity to go for and said he couldn't think they could do that under a semester plan most importantly we recognize that this time. Offers us an opportunity to shift the teachers students families are community as a whole we recognize that we are going to have to change our practices if we want to see differences in student achievement and SAS where we had a really exciting opportunity to partner with Title 1 I want to partner with title on today are Title 1 director Leslie Miller said tell us more about what we've been dreaming up for Frankfort high school and we're so excited about well it has been a long time getting that are high school his open a title one building and that's for a multitude of reasons but when we do break down those Title 1 funds and most other schools it would take away money adding those to this to the high school yeah but we recognize is he in love what are high school still even though kids cross the threshold of a parade in the 9th grade it doesn't mean that things are just now by hey you don't need Title 1 support what I think you also know is that will be great and I pray to you before. County, their life and it's also very important one to make sure they will be successful in future so be represented with some additional funding by the I do we need based on I don't want a house and we have some when we discuss what we could do with those we thought this was a perfect opportunity to look at what would it mean if the high school became a targeted assistance building and basically needs it the wait either one works is all for all the floor buildings are cool why programs meaning there's a lot of flexibility in the way we use those fun it would mean a little bit more work on the side of the high school when we use those funds because they would be called what's a targeted assistance show me meaning we only service a targeted group of students to come from certain circumstances as we would like to make better and I can supplement their support be providing additional funds so what are high school need to do what we're currently working on is looking at the data of all freshmen and we have to choose by for the state to move data points to determine which foods are the most Title 1 funding support we are new license currently grades and nwea test scores so that we have a balance of what they do on a day-to-day basis as well as they're overlooking a text that they can one time to show their proficiency and because we were not able to do that in a spray that's been great day to that we can use a nice. We're going to use those two data points as well as other pieces that we are going to look at the whole child Pinkerton put and we're going to figure out what we would like to do is create a group of things that we know if we didn't provide the support they aren't the potential to not succeed in high school we want to look at our lives meeting so we would like to call this project Excel and for those you know me from the reading Champions program you know I like the deposit so it's probably program we want it to feel that way I want them to know they've been chosen for this part of this program would be that students are presented with the option of we are here for you we have a wonderful opportunity for you to come to the high school and then you come or here to support we want to ensure that those students have a great relationship with her ninth grade teachers the teachers understand their learning practices they understand their family needs they understand way to connect with her family we want to have those students work on cell gold around the running for the we know that we could Target exactly what it is they need to be able to do this work we're going to need a wonderful wonderful person and so we would like to call them a title on your back in it that's something we're all very familiar with an R are other Title One building and well that sounds more like it's someone who was pulled in from the classroom and they let me help you with reading that's not what the nature of this intervention it is this person meets with those students is that those goals and then that goes to the classroom to sit in there with students to see their learning check on their progress talk to teachers and say how are things going what can I do to help his feel better for this child they will also be there to say they're not getting it where did you guys meet some dude that anything we could do to figure out how we can get this kid understanding and without allowing those barriers of just difficult me to read tablet or gold sounds great and wonderful for the high school we know that it's just important the middle school so we would like to extend this a big project Excel next year into the 8th grade with an 8th grade Title 1 interventionist that would do much the same two individuals working very closely to create this program and I think it might big long-term future goals I'd love to see this it's 5th to 6th grade as well as the third grade agreed that is Blue Ridge we know kid have a bridge there that we need to help them cross so one of the things that we know we are going to need to do is we we as we thought about this is how do we get these kids on board after we create the data points we're going to we asked you to come in meet with their families meet with the teachers meet with our bed ministration in face we've got a great deal for you we know we can help you succeed there's no reason for you to look at your freshman year without a plan how you will graduate one of the things that we've done as a team so far in such a smart goals and we were almost scared I'm going to say it out loud sending payroll scared of what grade on track ready to go and we feel like his that support and the time that they need all these two Endeavor parts are a little bit different that's why I wanted to talk about changing mindsets because I feel like climbing provides us an opportunity to think differently about how we educate and how we don't let it slip through the cracks when he died play kids just end up being kind of
